Latin American Short Stories Pablo Barra New Orleans Literature St. Charles Avenue Baptist Church Faith Formation Wednesday Night

Latin American Short Stories

Join us for a literary workshop at 6 PM on Wednesday evenings (Sept. 24, Oct. 1, and Oct. 8), exploring contemporary Latin American fiction. We will read short stories by Roberto Bolaño, Alejandro Zambra, and Liliana Colanzi that offer a window into a side of Latin America not often seen in the United States.

We will delve into an unlikely friendship between two writers in exile, a young woman's disturbing coming-of-age under her mother's watchful religious eye, and one man's memories of a brutal Chilean school. All are welcome to participate in this literary discussion.

Blessing of the Pets

Sunday, Oct. 12 (3:00 PM)

Join us in the courtyard of our church at 3 PM on the afternoon of Sunday, Oct. 12, for our third annual Blessing of the Pets service. This short, informal service happens around the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi.

Bring your pets (dogs, cats, reptiles, etc.), and Pastor Marc will lead us in a litany of thanksgiving for the presence of our pets in our lives, and then each pet will receive a short blessing. Light refreshments will also be available.

Exploring Gender Identity

Tuesday, Oct. 14 (7 PM)

Join us for an informative evening with Dr. Emily Starr, an expert in gender identity and inclusive education. Dr. Starr will guide us in deepening our understanding of gender identity and expanding our empathy toward transgender, nonbinary, and gender-diverse individuals.

Whether you’re a parent, educator, faith-leader, or community member, this session offers meaningful tools to foster compassion and inclusion.

We’re proud to partner with the St. Charles Center for Faith + Action and PFLAG New Orleans.

Theology on Tap (Oct. 23 - 5:30 PM)

This group gathers for conversation and fellowship once a month on a Thursday evening at a local brewery or restaurant. A short reading is often selected for discussion (see below), but we mostly enjoy spending time with one another. Contact Pastor Marc for more information: marc.boswell@scabc.org.

No-Cost Community Events

They are, instead, simply enriching and entertaining opportunities that we joyfully offer back to our neighbors, friends, and the wider-community. Join when you can, and be sure to check back for more information throughout the year. Click here for more information.
